Questions and discussion about solar, batteries, and electrification
,
as you can see below the meter reads over the 90 days, however with the usage we were only there for 20 days of the 90 and the other 70 days all breakers are switched off except the mains switch which means all solar power generated goes back into the grid.
Obviously there is a difference between the winter months than the summer months.
My main question is if we are using less power during the day than the system generates is that power free to us and not charged and the excess then goes into the grid for a credit or do we get charged for power consumed and then a credit for the power generated.
The system was installed in 2017, and yes we do get a lot of notifications of the power being dropped offline for the day whilst work is being done.
This account is for our place on Yorke peninsula, my Ceduna place is off the grid.
Ok, a bit confused here as you seem to showing parts of two bills.
So lets only look at the billing period, 11th June till 13 Sept 21.
You changed from solar to solar savers during this period.
As you do not have a smart meter your bill is calculated on daily averages,
The are 95 days in your billing cycle.
You daily use for GeneralUsage is 460 / 95 ( 4.842105kW a day)
Your solar output is 1173 / 95 (12.348kW a day)
So you would have been paid 6*12.348kW at your solar rate and then 89*12.348kW at your solar savers rate.
I am going to make up some easy figures her to explain your bill.
For your solar rate lets make it $0.10 a kW, for your solar savers lets make it $0.20 a kW.
For your GeneralUsage lets make it $0.40 a kW.
Your supply charge is $1.00 a day.
All prices I have made up include GST if applicable.
Supply Charge 95 days $95.00
GeneralUsage 95 days $184.00
- $279.00 (Debit)
Solar 6 days $7.41
SolarSavers 89 days $219.78
+$227.19 (Credit)
Your final bill would be $279.00 minus $227.19 You need to pay $51.81 for this period
So you have to calculate your debits and your credits and the subtract your credits from debits to get any amount payable.

Hi Neil,
the Math's of it is not my problem, just disappointed that 20 days use outstrips 95 days of generation and if I had used it for 95 days the bill would have been $750 - $175 = $575 guess I am spoilt by being off the grid in Ceduna.
Could be worse when I was in Darwin in 1979 if people had their own generators they had to be wired in before the meters, so you paid them for the power you generated from your own generator.
Well I am behind this billing period.
Cost Per Day | -$ 0.6626 | |
Supply Cost per Day | $ 0.8910
Peak Usage per Day | $ 1.7701
Off Peak usage per Day | $ -
Solar income per day | $ 3.3236 |
So my projection for the end of my current billing period is a measly $60 Credit, this is due to the number of overcast days. Last week or so has been good with some higher generation days.
Below is my tracking for the month so far and we look like generating just over 34kW today as well.

18-Sep-21 | 5.759 | 20.577 | 25.20 | 4.62 |
I don't know if you realised that if you only used power for 20 days in your bill then you were using 460 / 20 or 23kW a day which is about the same amount we used in the first six days of this month.
You should take the time and review your usage. Look at your fridges, lights, hot water service etc.
Have a good day.

the rate varies depending on your location, I am getting 12cents on the Yorke peninsula SA at my shack,
but also you need to continually be checking the rates and re-sign up to keep the max rate, if you go 12 months then they revert you back to the minimum.
in the past when I had a shop I would have to change provider to get them to call me back and offer a
better rate for me not to change.
at my home I am completely off grid as I am over 2.5 km from a power line and they wanted me to pay $250,000 for the line in so they could then charge me for power...
I don't know where you live but in most states:
1. If power goes past the property you will be charged a supply charge.
2. If mains water goes past the property you will be charged a supply charge.
3. If sewage goes past the property you will be charged a supply charge.
