We’re excited to launch our new Battery Rewards Plan— an energy plan designed for customers with home batteries in NSW, QLD and SA who want to make the most of their stored energy.

By choosing to export energy back to the grid during peak times, eligible customers can earn up to $600 in Digital Visa Gift Cards.^ It’s our way of rewarding smart energy choices that support a more sustainable grid.

Unlock more value from your battery: https://www.agl.com.au/residential/energy/compare-plans/energy-offer?webid=BRPLAN

^Prepaid Digital Visa gift cards are allocated quarterly and value varies depending on kWh exported in certain peak times.  Earn a $10 gift card if you export between 1kWh and 50kWh and for every additional 50kWh an extra $10 will be added to the card value – up to a maximum of $400 each quarter.

Thanks @SolarVaulter and @Pen_AGL .  I am on monthly billing and that shows my end billing period as the end of the each calendar month (ie first bill ended 31 Dec 2025) - and does not show a billing quarter.  Does the quarter end 28 Feb 26 (first 3 months after joining) or 31 Mar 26 (calendar quarter).  I had done my calculations based on ending in Feb, but only received the first card in Apr so am hoping it isnt Mar as would have exported an extra month in the first period!

I'm getting in touch to query the way in which the AGL battery rewards program is being promoted, administered and handled by AGL and it's customer service representatives.

Our household recently had a solar/ battery system installed and we we have been with AGL for both Electricity & Gas. Our battery/inverter is a Sigenergy unit, and a such we were eligible for the $1000 credit if we stayed with AGL's plan for over 12 months.

This particular retail plan is not available to view on the convoluted AGL website. There is no plan or rates summary available online and customer service representatives have given me false information when calling up to inquire about the plan specifics.

As regards the way in which the newly administered credits are to be issued from May 12th, the move away from credit gift-cards to AGL bill credits means that the feed-in proceeds are now effectively held hostage by AGL.

In addition to this, the AGL App provides no visibility of the credited energy feed-in until you receive your bill. This is laughably archaic and unfriendly to customers when compared to other providers (see Globirds app & their ZeroHero offering for example).

We were initially told by an AGL customer service rep on the phone that the credits from our electricity plan could be applied to our gas bill, but upon asking for clarification in writing (via AGL chat) before signing up, we were subsequently informed that the electricity feed-in-tariff credit could not be used in this way.

The newly administered battery rewards plan, beginning from May 12th, means that credits applied to your electricity plan cannot be used to pay off your gas bill, even if they are on the same AGL account. The credits are also not able to be paid out into a bank account. So what is the point of these credits?

The financial value of the solar-surplus or battery export electricity that consumers provide to AGL simply cannot be utilised by customers and it's value is retained and locked-in by AGL.

It's only available utility is to pay for more electricity from AGL, which is the complete opposite of what a solar/battery system sets out to achieve. The value of our feed-in can thus never be realised.

Globird allows feed-in credits to offset gas bills on the same account, and has significantly better app functionality. Flowpower allows credits to be paid out to your bank account.

What is the value in AGL's feed in credits? We will be moving on to another utility provider in the near future based on these factors.

Agreed. Unless AGL confirms the change also means peak bonus FITS become bankable, the best one can hope for is a zero electricity bill with an otherwise unusable credit.  The whole Battery Rewards concept would be pointless, with far better options out there.

Yes, Tony. That is the conclusion I have come to also. AGL and other large 'gentailers' will struggle to maintain customers if this is their approach.

There are much more agile companies with innovative products out there, that are still profitable for the retailers, without short-changing customers of the value they offer to the grid and the energy providers.

The customer service approach of these competitors and the clarity of their vision, their products, and their communication ability leave AGL for dead.

The electrification of the grid and the movement towards local generation, storage and solar-surplus means that the older model of supply and simply having to take what retailers offer, is changing rapidly. Grid-supply is becoming a fall-back option, not the backbone for many solar/battery households.

If AGL chooses to use customers as a cheap feed in mechanism to extract electrons with no financial recompense, then what is the value proposition for customers on these retail plans? None that I can see.

If AGL aren't allowing us access to the value of our own electrical and thus financial inputs, then the return on investment and pay-back-time for the significant capital outlay of a solar/battery system makes no sense. I'll be moving on to a retailer that both values my custom and what my electrons bring to the table.

Given the success and huge uptake of the goverments Cheaper Home Batteries Program, it is unbelievable that AGL still doesn't have the basic functionality within it's app to show customers their exports to the grid. This is especially the case, when these exports are tied to explicit feed-in-tariff rates that provide tangible financial value to customers at specific times.

How can a retailer be this slow in implementing such critical data-management? How does it expect to keep customers, if it can't fulfill the basic duty of informing customers how their electricity is being used, charged and credited? The mind boggles.

PS The initial post's inquiry hasn't been solved, so marking it as such is disingenuous. It is a glacially slow work in progress.

Hi @Jorge75

Thank you for continuing to raise this - I understand your frustration, particularly given how central export data and feed‑in values are for customers with solar and batteries.

You’re right that, at present, the AGL app does not clearly surface export and credit information in a simple, real‑time way, and that this falls short of what many customers reasonably expect. This feedback is understood and has been raised internally, and something we are actively working on.

As a workaround, export data is currently available in the app:

  • Open the AGL app
  • Go to Overview → Electricity → Main usage
  • At the bottom of the screen, change the view from $ to kWh
  • Scroll down and select a specific day
  • Look at the “Sold to grid” section on the left-hand side
  • Tapping into the day shows a 30‑minute interval breakdown, allowing you to see exports during specific periods (e.g. 5–9pm)

You can use the kWh shown as “sold to grid” to calculate your feed‑in credit based on the applicable tariff for that time period. Please note that this data is currently around two days behind.

That said, I agree this is not an ideal experience and improving visibility of exports, credits, and overall transparency in the app is an active area of work. I appreciate you taking the time to provide detailed, comparative feedback, it’s being taken seriously and helps inform where improvements are most needed.

Thanks

Thank you AGL for your reply, but it’s all too little, too late. I have been in touch with a number of AGL customer reps throughout this week and have been very disappointed with the way AGL promotes, administers and deals with customers in relation to the AGL app functionality and the battery rewards plan.

Our household recently had a solar/ battery system installed and we‘ve been with AGL for both Electricity & Gas. Our Sigenergy battery/inverter is eligible for the $1000 credit if we stay with AGL's plan for over 12 months, but we will not be joining this plan or staying with AGL for electricity.

The Sigenergy retail battery rewards plan is not available to view anywhere on the convoluted AGL website. There is no plan or rates summary available online and customer service representatives have given me false information when calling up to inquire about plan specifics. They even refused to pass on relevant offer details and plan documentation via chat or email, explaining that I’d have to call the battery or resolutions team to get this absolutely basic information!

We were initially promised by an AGL customer service rep on the phone that the credits from our electricity plan could be applied to our AGL gas bill on the same account, but upon asking for clarification in writing (via AGL chat) before signing up, we were subsequently informed that the electricity feed-in-tariff credit could not be used in this way.

In addition to the AGL apps lack of functionality, the way in which feed-in credits are to be issued from May 12th (moving from credit gift-cards to AGL bill credits) means that the feed-in proceeds are now effectively held hostage by AGL. This is economically nonsensical and deprives customers of any value when compared to other providers.

The newly constituted battery rewards plan means that credits applied to your electricity plan cannot be used to pay off your gas bill, even if they are on the same AGL account. The credits are also not able to be paid out into a bank account. So what exactly is the point of these credits?

The financial value of the solar-surplus feed-in and the battery-exports that consumers provide to AGL at peak times simply cannot be utilized by customers and it's value is therefore retained and locked-in by and for AGL. It's only available utility is to pay for more electricity from AGL, which is the complete opposite of what a solar/battery system sets out to achieve. The value of our feed-in can thus never be realized.

Globird allows feed-in credits to offset gas bills on the same account, and has significantly better app functionality. Flowpower allows credits to be paid out to your bank account.

What is the value for the customer in AGL's approach to feed-in credits when signed up to the Battery Rewards Program? None that I can see.

AGL has chosen to use customers feed-in as a disingenuous way to extract the value of our spare electrons with no financial recompense. If AGL don't allow us access to the value of our own electrons and steals the financial value of these inputs, then the return on investment and pay-back-time for the significant capital outlay of a solar/battery system makes no sense. I'll be moving on to a retailer that both values my custom and what my electrons bring to the table.

Hi @Jorge75

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback. I’m sorry for the experience you’ve had — it’s clear you’ve put a lot of thought into this.

To clarify a few points:

  • Details of the Battery Rewards plan, including eligibility and how credits are applied, are available here:
    https://www.agl.com.au/brplan

  • Separately, under AGL’s solar feed‑in terms and conditions, customers may request payment of an accumulated Solar Credit Balance by cheque or EFT. These payouts relate to standard solar feed‑in credits and are subject to the applicable terms here:
    https://www.agl.com.au/vicsolarterms

I’m also sorry that earlier advice you received was inconsistent, particularly around credit use across electricity and gas accounts. That’s understandably disappointing and not the experience we aim to provide.

Your comparison with other retailers, app functionality, and the broader points you’ve raised about customer value and return on investment are fair observations. Feedback like this is actively used to inform reviews of our products, app experience and communications, and I appreciate you letting us know.

While I understand and respect your decision to consider alternative retailers, please know that your comments have been noted and shared internally. They highlight genuine improvement opportunities for how battery and solar customers are supported.

Thank you again for taking the time to raise this.

Hi Ab12345,

I have an Alpha ESS battery and have signed up to battery rewards, and VPP.

I'm disappointed, as Alpha told me their app only enables discharge settings to home and they may update it in future. A helpful AGL solar guy explained this is the case... AGL may put pressure on Alpha. He said even on VPP, AGL can't enable auto time discharge settings for me. I'm willing to wait it out for 6 months, because of the generous account credits AGL has offered me for joining and staying as  a VPP
