Is it fraud? New Controlled Load using your solar

So recently anyone with a Controlled Load (CL1 or CL2) service was advised that they were changing the timings to move some of the CL during the day when solar is abundant.  Makes logical and environmental sense.

What they failed to tell us is that the CL will be using your own solar, but they will still charge you full-rate for your CL service.

In my case, where my HWS dissipates approx 4800kW I can observe the following:

Solar production :~3kW

Approx 500W used by house

Leaves 2.5kW exported.

CL activates for 10 min (11:00am)

Now importing 2.4kW

Thus i am only drawing down 2.4kW from the grid..

Actual grid consumption for that 10min:

2400 / (60min/10) = 400Wh

What did my raw data from smart meter say?  931Wh for CL usage.

So I got billed for all the CL1 usage, even though it came from my own solar.

If you have your own monitoring as I do (2 independent systems), you might want to check what is happening with your CL service.

You raise really valid questions but I think you should start a new thread because this one is noted as SOLVED.  A new thread might be a better flag?

Hi Lester,

I asked the Ombdusman for exactly this (two seperate meters).

This is the ONLY way it will work properly. I was denied. They (the Ombudsman) simply turned our CL off during the day. It was the only solution that they could provide (as to be honest, that dont understand it).

A single Atlas 7A smart meter will always charge you for your own solar if the CL circuit is energised.

But as you say, sometimes you want to make use of CL at a cheaper rate, and use your solar for mains usage.

How long ago did you get this set up (and what model are your meters)?

I will ask for the same set up.

@Wisha when we went from analogue to digital metering with solar, SAPN (our DSPN) installed 2 meters.

The Atlas Mk10d for general usage and solar feed in, and an Atlas Mk7a for CL (controlled load).

I am pretty sure DNSPs in various states / regions use different meters though, probably have contracts etc.

After a year or so, and realising we were paying much more than we needed to for the HWS, with the CL and HWS just doing their own thing off the grid, and not affected in any way by our excess solar.

We had the sparky wire the HWS into the main circuit (Atlas Mk10d).

Our Atlas Mk7 now sits in the meter box not recording anything, thought best to leave it there in case we ever want to revert to CL for whatever reason, plan change, retailer change, etc . . .

We had a cheap manual timer put on the HWS circuit, and while I could set that for a few hours during solar soak in summer easy enough, but think it's too 'dangerous' to time it for winter and shoulder months, as the 3.6kw draw, combined with other things we may be using during the day, could easily go over soalr production and draw from the grid, thus cost us more, so we time it now for cheapest TOU we have on our plan (a very cheap midnight to 6am tariff).

The HWS used to be around $1.30 - $1.40 a day on CL, now it's 30c to 40c a day, so a good saving.

In peak summer, I probably will set it for say 1100 - 1500, as we are producing around 7kW to 9kW so can run numerous appliances simultaneously and still not draw from the grid.

That's easily overridden if there is a rogue day of dark cloud / rain etc, can just flick the timer switch off, or change the timer to the cheap time tariff.

If you google your DNSP and perhaps terms like meter type, you might find they have info on what meters they use / supply.

I was asking you, your thread of interest and helpful in sorting out whether we make some significant changes.

I hope you get an answer that is able to be posted - because we all should know and understand what it seems you have discovered, and so ably explain.

Good luck with it.
