Reading E355 meter

Just over a week ago a Landis & Gyr E355 smart meter was installed. I asked the installer for a manual for it, he didn't have one and said to contact my supplier. I asked him how to read it, he didn't know and said to contact my supplier! I asked him how the boost worked, he didn't know and said to contact my supplier!! I came to this site looking for a contact email address but there isn't one. So, I lodged a complaint with the complaint function on this site, I complained about the lack of an email address and asked for the manual for the meter. I have heard nothing since.

The reason I want an email address, and didn't phone, is because I want a paper trail for the inevitable problems, something consumer bodies advise doing. I guess my next step is to lodge a complaint with the Energy Ombudsman.

Poor service? I guess you could say that.

Hi @RichardP, while the meters are programmed by your Metering Co-ordinator, who is not your retailer, they are programmed to Distributor set Tariff codes and times, which are available on the Distributor website. If you are looking to know how your controlled load is supplied, the information is available on your online services. To make it easier though, I can send you a private message so that I can get that information for you. Regards- Mark.

So this where I'm up to thus far.

There is a  Metering Coordinator, independent of the energy retailer and the network distributor and has overall responsibility for appointing metering service providers and making sure that metering installations are provided, installed and maintained in accordance with the National Electricity Rules. So AGL is my retailer, SAPN are my distributor, and Intellihub are the metering co-ordinator. AGL basically work with them to receive metering data, do installations and investigations.

As far as I am aware, initial tariff types for SA are all set by SA Power Networks whether they are responsible for the meters or not, in this case the move towards smart meters to all be controlled load in SA, and  meters are programmed to reflect those tariff types. The Customer Support person I spoke to appeared to have no understanding of any of this, including SAPN's responsibilities.

So AGL should be able to provide information on how to read these meters, but if my experience (and that of others too) is anything to go by the people in their Resolution Centre can't help because they have NO information on these meters (even though they're supposed to have it). Intellihub are responsible for the programming of these meters through their Metering Co-ordinator, and therefore providing relevant information, but apparently aren't interested in providing help to customers (even though their website proclaims customer assistance as one of their "Values").  I shall refrain from using the language I feel is necessary to describe this "system", the information is apparently out there but you have to know the right questions to ask to find it and to do that you need to know how the system works first to know the questions to ask!

Now to the meter itself (E355), every reference I've found about it so far eventually refers back to Australia in some way so it appears to me that it is designed specifically for Australia (for Intellihub?), which could account for the lack of information on the L&G website(s). I could be wrong on this but I've found nothing so far to indicate that I am. One reference mentioned that it was designed to allow for "disaggregation", which is the ability of the power company to analyse the data from it to determine just what type of appliances you are using and when. This is referred to in the industry as NILM - Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring. I suspect it also provides the ability to remotely shut off your power, and possibly solar export as well. If my assumption is correct about their manufacture then it's likely there is NO user manual for these meters as that would be the responsibility of Intellihub and so far they have shown a callous disregard for customer requests for information.

My Controlled Load times for the smart meter are 11:30 PM- 6:30 AM, and 9:30AM-3:30PM. The second figure is interesting as I'm sure my previous meter only had a 2-hour mid-afternoon slot. Other than having some solar panels my "installation" would have to be considered pretty ordinary, so I suspect these times are likely to be pretty standard for most people but it could vary depending on individual household installations.

What a debacle.

I forgot to add, Mark referred to my Controlled Load information being available via online services but so far I haven't found it. The SAPN website only provides a graphical display of useage (at least that's all I can find).

Forgot to add....

Suppliers already have the ability to switch off your solar inverter even if you don't have a smart meter and have had the ability for some time.

And no, they don't switch off the power to the area and of course currently don't have the ability to move the moon to cause a solar eclipse.

Thanks Neil, was that snip from the SAPN site?

I'm curious just how do they access my inverter? It only has wi-fi, which is accessed via my internet, my previous one didn't even have wi-fi.

As @_Mark_ said the information about your account is available in your account.

As to the inverter shut down, why don't you read your inverter manual.

Cheers Neil

Neil, the information is NOT available in my online account, which was confirmed by the nice lady I spoke to at the Resolution Centre. Which is why I asked for it.

Of course I've read the manual! Nowhere does it say the inverter can be remotely switched off, and prior to the installation of the new meter no-one could isolate it from the grid remotely. As you've stated that they've had that ability for some time I'll ask again - how do they do it without having a smart meter installed?

As to reading the manual I suggest you actually read the manual to find out how they turn off your solar inverter.

It's really irrelevant, if they want to turn off your inverter they can.

By the way do you own the full service manual for your motor vehicle.

I have the full service manual of my current vehicle, some 7000 pages, it has enabled me to do many things to cut costs in setting up my caravan and car. ( I have been on the road for a while on this trip)

As an Amateur Radio Operator I download the full service manuals for all of my gear and repair all of my radios.

I also like peoples responses in any posts that I read, that I like.

Cheers Neil

Neil,  the information you have in your account (lucky you!) is NOT shown in my account, as I've repeatedly said. All it shows is the plan I'm on and the rates. Why is this so difficult for you to understand? Until Mark kindly found it for me I had no success in finding my controlled load times. I also have no idea about any "shoulder times" that may apply.

As for SAPN shutting down inverters, yes, they can do that using the sledgehammer approach of increasing grid voltage (as I'm sure you know), BUT that is NOT guaranteed to work because if the inverter high-volt setting is above the increased grid voltage then the inverter will not shut down. And there's no way for SAPN to know that unless they check EVERY inverter's setting. Which isn't going to happen. I'm assuming the smart meter can be controlled remotely by SAPN to isolate the in-feed from the inverter (it would seem logical), that way they can be sure inverters are isolated, and is another reason they want smart meters installed everywhere. But, of course, there's no way to confirm that as Intellihub are being extremely secretive about these meters (must pose a threat to National Security 😂).

I don't know why you raised the subject of car manuals, as it seems pretty irrelevant, but since you ask - yes, I have a full service manual for my car, and have had one for each vehicle I've owned, as well as my motorbikes, and my laser printer, and my industrial sewing machines, and my lathes, and pretty much anything that needs one. IF I can't find the manual then the 'net and youtube invariably provide the necessary repair information I need.

Except for this bloody meter!!
