Questions and discussions about your electricity and gas meters, connections, disconnections and more
Hello, we recently moved into a new build. We are two adults and our first bill for 66 days was $717. Furthermore our house only uses gas for hot water and cooktop. Our landlord says it’s very odd.
We kept an eye on the meter and made comparisons while nothing was in use. And it’s slowly moving.
Also does anyone know what ‘start read’ means on the bill? Does this mean someone was using the gas before we moved in?

Hi @Edc2800, Thank you for taking the time to get in touch with us.
The start read is the initial meter read that is taken to establish your account, this is to ensure that you are only paying for the usage from the time you have moved in.
There are a few things that you can do to confirm the gas usage. We would recommend checking if the end read is actual or estimated, if it has been estimated you can submit a meter read via the AGL app or My Account.
We would also recommend running an isolation test when suitable for your household. You can do this by checking the meter reading, waiting a minimum of 45 minutes with NO usage, then checking it again. If the meter readings don't change, then your meter likely isn't faulty. You can also do this when using individual gas appliances to check how much gas the appliances need to work.
