Direct Debit setup doesn't appear to have changed anything

I am trying to set up Direct Debit from a bank account. When I submit the bank details, I am returned to the page that prompts me to set up direct debit. My account still says I need to set up direct debit. A confirmation page would be nice? This is simple stuff, and also infuriating.
