I learned about 50 years ago not to do direct debits with refard to utilities bills ( the concept of bill smoothing was not something available back then). I simply worked out what my utilities cost me every fortnight and paid that amount from my wages each payday. I have never had a problem with bills or having to get refunds for too much credit in the account. I am usually about $20 to $30 in credit after each bill has been paid.
