Real-time data for consumers

There have previously been discussions about real-time data from smart meters, at the time this wasn't possible but things are changing quickly. On the AEMC webpage I find "On 18 December 2025, the AEMC published a final determination and final rules to enable all consumers and their appointed representatives to access real-time data from the smart meter."

Will there be a way to access my smart meter data in real-time?

You have always had that ability with various aftermarket power meters, the ones that use CT clamps around the power cables in the meter.
This has been available and work with even old analogue meters.

Technically, a sparky should hook that up, so that is done correctly, and due to the rear board access with live wire risk.

I'm not sure live info could be accessed still, pretty sure retailers still don't get the data from the DNSP until next day, which is why consumer access is usually late next day / early evening.

Weekends can be a further half day delay.

While solar and battery apps can give such info built in, it would be nice for people without those benefits knowing what they are consuming real time too.

Hopefully it will come soon.

Thanks for the response. It seems retailers should be able to access the data and to pass it on to end customers. Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) news article can be found by searching for "AEMC’s final rule gives consumers smarter data options", the forum won't allow me to post the link to the webpage.

I have a pretty recent smart meter so I'm hopeful it's compatible.

Thanks Mick, that search found the page . . .

2nd and 3rd paragraphs say it all, will come with time.

"In a final rule from the AEMC, all new smart meters installed from 30 November 2028 will have the capability to wirelessly communicate real-time data.

As part of the changes, customers with these meters will have the right to access their real-time data, free of charge. Over time, as all meters are replaced, all consumers will have access to real-time data free of charge."

Probably well into post 2030 for existing consumers needing to upgrade when a meter fails, or this is mandated for further rollout / replacement.
After all, simply having regular smart meters is mandated for 2030, so from end Nov 2028 those last 13 months of new installs will have to have the capability of real time data, the rest prior to that, and existing smart meters, will need a rollout likely over a decade or more.

Maybe look into the type of units I mentioned.

We used to have one on our old analogue meter, worked with a phone app sending real time and historic data to the phone.

I just had a look around and found these quick examples . . .
