Meters incorrectly labelled & high bills

A new block of 5 apartments & our gas bills vary wildly from $40 to $300+.   My meter shows no movement (which should probably be my next door which is empty.  My neighbours (a couple) have a $300+ bill whilst they have been away.  Monitoring our meters is showing usage when no-one is home & no hot water being used.  Residents have noticed a ‘hissing sound’ & elsewhere a gas smell. One plumber was called who said nothing is wrong.  Clearly there is something very wrong.

Hello,

That situation is dangerous and unacceptable. Call your gas utility's emergency line immediately about the smell and hiss, and then report the wild billing variations you likely have a major leak and/or cross-piped meters.

Hi @Allie22

Thanks for reaching out.

There’s another possible situation to consider. If you don’t turn off your hot-water system before going away—and it isn’t an instant system—the water in the tank can cool down and cause the system to reheat, using gas even while you're gone. Please check your gas usage again after turning off the hot-water system to see whether the consumption remains the same.
