Hi Kcrai45, your going to love my reply I hope, look at https://reductionrevolution.com.au/products/watts-clever-inplug I purchased severall of them and now monitor things like my fridge, pond light, pond filter and etc. I won't go into detail as it's all there on their website.

A cheaper place is https://www.wattsclever.com.au/products/inplug-wifi-app-controlled-socket but often they are sold thru.

Our local library has a kit you can borrow which has an energy meter included.  I borrowed it and went around the house to each device and measured the power and current draw of each device.  It has a piggy back plug and you can leave it in for a either a maximium or  cumulative reading.   Check with your local library to see if they have an energy kit  (this is in S.A)

Hi Woodunn,

I actually did also borrow that same style unit from the library, sometimes you have to book in advance, other times you hey lucky and they have one available straight away. The reason opted for the Watts unit was it was cheap to buy and it allowed me to control that appliance by phone from anywhere in the world not for the fridge but for other appliances that allowed for a schedule for on and off  so I can get a real reading, best thing is you have choice.

I actually wrote a long article for here along the lines of the 'spare' fridge. In the end I dumped the old fridge even though it was relatively new and opted for a new fridge and the pay back was quite quick so I got a new fridge and was quids ahead. At the same time I got a contractor for free to change over all lights to LED's, ( REES scheme) new washing machine and eventually changed over most all appliances, I did my sums well I think knowing that Electricity will not ever go down, just up and up.

Living in SA does have many pluses to help with cutting down the cost of the household electricity usage.
