Tesla ‘Waking’ when api polls the car

In the March 2022 update, I noticed the bit about someone leaving the Tesla api trial because the Tesla of the concern of the car waking repeatedly.

in the last few months I have noticed this being a lot more noticeable, where the car is being polled repeatedly - maybe it is waking about 15-30 minutes - but not all the time.

i can understand why someone was concerned and left.  The car makes bang noises when the relays engage to wake the car from sleep when the car is polled.  Then the car may condition the battery and other functions while in a wake state.  I guess the concern is the wear and tear on that part for doing something it wasn’t designed to do as frequently.

The main bit here is the trial is at the mercy of the Tesla api.

i suspect there are smarts which could be implemented to reduce polling based on whether the car is already fully charged to it’s limit.  The fact it repeatedly polls, means it is using more energy and waking the car all the time, which means more charging, which defeats the purpose.

i can see some improvements in the way it could poll.

Hi @Vedaprime - thanks for taking the time to write this detailed post 👍

This is certainly something that we've kept hearing customer feedback on as the trial has progressed.  This is the first time I'd heard of the car making noise when it is polled; I can imagine that could be especially annoying if your car is within earshot at home.

I know the software providers we're working with for the the trial have tried to optimise how they poll the API, but it sounds like it still needs work.  I think your idea for reducing polling if the car has reached it's charge limit is a great one so I'll pass that feedback along to the app developers.

Hopefully the APIs that car manufacturers build evolve over time as well which could improve the experience also.

Out of curiosity, which app are you using in the trial (ev.energy or Flexcharging)?

am using ev.energy.

When a Tesla wakes, it’s a double clunk noise (relays). Then it goes back to sleep between 3 and 9 minutes most times depending on what it is doing.  It may decide to turn on fans while awake depending on battery temps/battery conditioning.

If it is polling ever 15 minutes -30 minutes, it can add up to a lot of tine awake.

i haven’t checked yet what the vampire battery drain is with the app.  If I was to not drive the car in a week, it would lose 0.5% battery before the app.  Typically if I check the car repeatedly through the Tesla app (where it wakes often) , it can lose 1% a day (before the app) - so I wouldn’t be surprised if the polling is at least this.
