I’m in Brisbane and on a Demand Tariff. My demand period is 1600-2100 everyday
With the QLD scheduled charging periods moving to
Morning: 5:30am - 10:00am
Evening: 3:30pm - 8:30pm
I question why?
Would it not make more sense to align the times of the demand period and the charging schedule?
Also why is the morning schedule lasting so long and not ending till 1000?
My solar system is well underway by then. Infact my home battery is already full by ~0830 so I fell i’m missing out on some opportunistic charging with the current schedule restraints
Even consulting the NEM wholesale pricing. By 0800 prices are generally under $200/MWh, so I fail to see why holding back scheduled charging so long into the morning has validity as clearly this isn’t a peak time going by market prices.
I do not understand when will AGL (and others) will get serious about trials and try something new. Why not trial new tariffs and smart charging with cheaper rates matched to wholesale prices and supply cheaper power? Why can't we have one rate for standard(current) rates for the house and anytime charging, along with smart/wholesale/cheap Tariff that is say 5cents measured behind the meter to take advanced of all the renewable very cheap power? This would help AGL as they can sell more Coal power throughout the day/high renewable times or at least help keep prices positive. I would like to see real change happen and AGL could make it happen and profit from the change.
I have to agree re:solar. For example, at 8am this morning my solar system was producing 3kW of power and 1 hour later, by 9am it was producing 5kW of power, yet I am unable to charge the car off excess solar due to the charging schedule limitation.
I am in the same camp. I also charge during solar hours too. It is an interesting aspect for those who don't have a daily commute when the api stops charging completely in daylight hours, when there could be charging from solar. I don't have the chargehq solution, but this does seem like a good model of prioritising charging from solar first
The EV.Energy app does have a solar function (in beta) - which appears to now be operational recently in the app. I don't know if AGL has the smarts yet to factor the solar feature in.
I'd also like to know what scheduled charging limitations have been added to weekends? There isn't grid peak demand at 7am on a Saturday or at 5pm on a Sunday as can be seen by the attached NEM pricing at 5pm today (Sunday).
People want to charge from excess solar and are generally only able to on weekends. Leaving a window on weekends from 9.30am-3.30pm sometimes isn't a big enough period to charge.
Interestingly, my charging in Murrumbeena was delayed until after 1030am Sunday morning due to “peak demand”. Perhaps lots of Zoom religious attendances!
Yeah mine too. I think it's a bit much the periods AGL is restricting people. Afternoon peak is fine. But the mornings I don't see the logic with so much solar in the grid keeping prices low.
Ultimately blocking people from self consumption will not go down well in the future.
I'm fine with some test and adjust during this trial period though.
Some great discussion going on here! I’m just catching up after some annual leave so I love to see the engagement here.
First and foremost I’d just want to reiterate that if these schedules are interfering with your charging needs, you can always choose to override them via the smart charging app you’re using in the trial – especially if you’re wanting to take advantage of excess solar generation! ☀️
We’re getting towards the end of the trial, and as we’ve been going through we’ve been testing & adjusting larger windows of managed charging to find the right balance of load shifting and customer needs. It’s great that you’re sharing this feedback as it helps us understand whether we’re getting the balance right or not.
Also one other note to @brettrob72 Re: New EV charging tariffs – we’re working on it! They’re a lot more complicated to develop than you’d think, especially behind the meter ‘Type of use’ ones as there are very strict regulations around the meters that are legally allowed to measure and bill energy usage in Australia, and unfortunately the vast majority of chargers/vehicles aren’t compliant (yet), and installation of sub-meters has been problematic in other trials we’ve run in the past.
Thanks again for your feedback and conversations here – keep it coming!
Hi @DwayneGC - it's not that strict. The credits will be applied to your account so long as you participate in one charging orchestration event each month.
So unless you're opting out every single time you charge, you'll be fine 👍
Thanks Andy, that's great to know. Is participating in an "orchestrated charging event" just automatically allowing the Chargefox app to disable charging between the set scheduled times?
Yep that's it @DwayneGC - if you want to get specific, the definition from the T&Cs is:
Orchestration Event means an event that You may participate in whereby We modify the EV Charger's settings to cause the EV Charger to Draw, Hold or Discharge at a particular point in time.
