Smart Charging schedules - how smart charging works
Simply put, we're trying to shift as much charging as possible outside of these morning and evening peak usage periods, every day of the week:
NSW & VIC
Morning: 6:30am - 11:00am
Evening: 4:30pm - 9:30pm
SA
Morning: 6:00am - 10:30am
Evening: 4:00pm - 9:00pm
QLD
Morning: 5:30am - 10:00am
Evening: 3:30pm - 8:30pm
How this is managed depends on the smart charging technology you are using! If you want to get into the nitty gritty of it, read on. 😊
If we installed a connected charger in your home:
This is the simplest to explain
The chargers will remotely turn off during the peak periods listed above
If you need to charge your car during the peak periods, you can hit the "Do not interrupt my charge" button in your Chargefox smart charging app
If we didn't install a charger in your home: (i.e. you're using the FlexCharging and EV.Energy apps)
It gets a bit more complicated 🙂
Because we are communicating with your Tesla directly, we can be a bit fancier with how we manage the charging:
First and foremost we will prioritise:
The 'ready by' or 'leave by' time you set in the app.
The minimum charge level you have set in the app (users of the FlexCharging app only)
Your energy rates - if you have a Time of Use tariff we will try to charge when your rates are lowest.
Whether you have home solar - If you have indicated in the app that you have solar we prioritise charging during the day.
The location of your car - we will only manage your charging when your car is at home.
We will shift as much charging as possible out of the morning and evening peak periods, so long as we can meet the above criteria. Your car is your car first - not a grid asset.
As always, if you need to charge during the peak periods, you can opt out of the charging session immediately using the app:
In the Flexcharging app - press the "Smart Charging is ON" button
In the ev.energy app - press the "Boost" button
That's about it. If you have any questions - ask away 😀
I’m currently using the EV.Energy app on the trial. One thing I would like to do is set to charge only during the day time (when I’m likely to have excess solar) even if this takes several days to fully charge, is it possible to do this?
I don't think it's possible with the current ev.energy app - I'm actually meeting with the folks at ev.energy later today so I'll raise this suggestion with them.
I'm curious with a feature like this, how accurate would it have to be for you to want to use it?
Would it need to know exactly how much excess solar you're generating so that it only charges your car with the excess (like Charge HQ)? Or is it good enough to just charge at times when solar is likely to be generating, even if it's drawing a little bit of that from the grid? Or maybe something else?
I've heard different opinions from different EV owners, so I'm curious how you feel about it?
@brettrob72 I've seen Charge HQ popping up in a few places - it's generating a bit of buzz. Do you use it? It looks really cool!
Yes, I use it but the sun here in SA (Victor Harbor) has not been great lately. Or when I am not working. Works great and adjusts to the excess solar if set, as I do, can use both solar and grid. I do turn it off when not in use so as to not upset the AGL controls over the car. Would love it to be a feature on the AGL app (flex charging) as it is great for small top-ups and great use of excess solar.

Hi Andy,
