topic 5KW throttle on system to grid in Solar, Batteries & Electrification

My solar system is generating up to 7KW to the battery and the house in the mornings (on the shortest day of the year). Once the battery is full the house will take .3KW and the remaining solar should feed into the grid. I have noticed that the solar production then is throttled back to 5KW plus the .3KW for the house. My contract states that there is a 10 KW limit. Is this correct or should the installer be changing that 5KW to 10 KW on our system?

Asking because in summer the difference will be considerably more. Does anyone else feed in more than 5KW?

Not sure if you are in a NEM state, or other, but all have different export limits and rules.

Export limits are set by your DNSP, many in the country are 5kw, some go to 10kw on a flexible exports arrangement.

Before solar is even quoted, the solar company should be getting approval by applying to the DNSP and they advise whatever limits apply to solar install.

If you are generating 7kw to the battery, you have an inverter at least that, most likely 10kw.

Exports can also be related to address, as there are some areas in grid sectors that have many solar installs, and they can handle less exports . . . the more solar rooftop in your area, the more chance your solar will be limited in export capacity, or flexible exports throttled in high production times.

Sounds like you have at least 10kw of solar, perhaps as high as 15kw, you might be in a higher latitude of Oz and be generating more than we do in SA through winter weather.

We have flexible exports here (up to 10kw) and feed in up to low 9kw to the grid in summer peak days, that's with 11.23kw of solar, and 2 x 5kw inverters (on 2 of 3 phases), in winter it can be less than a kw . . . sometimes with around 450w in the home tick over usage we might even be drawing a tiny amount from the grid, those are dark grey rainy days.

I think you should call your electricity provider (DNSP, shown on your bill) and you can easily give your NMI number and they should be able to tell you what export limit arrangements are in place for your address.

If there is a 5kw limit on exports in your area, your 10kw (or whatever) inverter will send the 7kw or other such to the battery ok, just not any excess to the grid.

Your contract 10 KW limit might just mean inverter size, not export limit.
