Telstra Smart Modem

Hi,

Looking to move over to AGL internet. Currently with telstra and have their telstra smart modem. Is this modem usable for AGL internet or would I need to get a different one?

Hi @Jeff5 ,

If it's compatible with the nbn network, you should be all good to use a BYO modem! To double-check that a specific model will work, you can always contact support.

I can't give an official confirmation of support, but if it helps I've spoken with other customers who have used the Telstra Smart Modem as a BYO modem with AGL Internet after configuring it for PPPoE in the modem settings.

I think that likely shows your current connection type with Telstra, because Telstra does use IPoE.

I notice it does allow you to enter PPPoE authentication details below, so I suspect you'd be fine to use it, perhaps with some configuration changes, but as it's still a BYO modem I'm not able to guarantee it. If you do a web search for "Telstra smart modem with other ISPs" you'll find more discussion on this topic. In some cases users report they needed to do a factory reset or change the configuration of their Smart Modem to get it working with other ISPs.

It worked fine. Just plugged it in and it was good to go. No config required.

Not too sure sorry, I'm still using the telstra modem as I don't have a house phone so that wasn't an issue for me.

AGL internet is terrible, I swapped over to try & get a decent deal on energy, mobile & nbn.

NBN drops out every 10 minutes!!

I tried using the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 but i couldn't configure it to connect, even when submitting a new user and ID with the AGL username in the PPP credentialing section of the Telstra Gateway.

The AGL helpdesk guy suggested I just buy a new TP link modem....

I can't imagine how frustrating this has been for you.
I can also suggest maybe worth giving Telstra a call and seeing if they can change any settings within the modem to help the connection with AGL, or you can make sure the modem hasn't been locked with Telstra.
If you are wanting to order a modem with us, you will need to give us a call on 131245 so we can order the modem for you.
