I have noticed lately that my house seems to consume a lot of power at 11 o’clock in the morning. I was thinking this could be a hot water service. Over the last couple of weeks also there’s been a lot of usage overnight from 1:30 am to 3:30 am. this is unusual because we don’t have any appliances on overnight even at the wall socket e.g. TVDVD oven microwave kettle. It’s all turned off. Any ideas welcome

"a lot of power" is subjective, but . . . you have a HWS on CL (controlled load) ?

Most CL is now put onto the solar soak hours, with renewables putting in surplus power through the day.

The opposite of how it used to be in the early hours, usually after midnight until about 0600.
During either, a HWS will cut on and heat to whatever is required, cut out, it might be an hour, or if much HW usage it could be 2 - 3 hours.

Depending where you are though, many DNSPs, the electricity suppliers, have two timings a day for CL to come on.

I've seen this mentioned for some NSW consumers online numerous times, where they actually have different CL options, eg some are on a single time of day use (I imagine usually solar soak), or another option where you are on that too but can get a boost during those early morning hours.

Your bill should say your CL type, and a bit of googling of your DNSP with that code should show your hours the HWS is heating.

You might also find other CL tariff options.

Or try calling AGL 131245 and you can probably find out quickly if this is the issue, and possibly be changed on the spot if so.

Thank you. I seem to be using extra power I haven’t before at 11am- 12 noon and overnight approx 1-3. We have t changed things we do or added appliances

Ok, but who's to know if your power supplier have changed the billing for the CL recently ?

I have seen this in other posts on here and social media energy groups, where suppliers have changed the CL periods as renewables have shifted cheapest power to daytime, and also kept a second CL boost in the early morning hours.

How do you know this ?

From a most recent bill info ?

From looking at the bar chart in your daily view through your usage chart on the AGL app ?

Or maybe from your data download ?

You must be nailing it down to that level one of those last two ways ?

All it takes is a call to AGL or even your supplier, as per both contacts info shown on any bill.

At least here in SA our DNSP (SAPN) is very open to talking to you about your queries, yours probably will be too.
