Setting up direct debit

Having trouble setting up direct debit and paying for my internet account - went in numerous times but didn’t accept details - eventually accepted payment (but it was late of course and I was charged a fee) Just tried to set up DD for the latest account and still won’t accept details! Couldn’t even pay the bill directly!
