Perhaps unexpected power failure notifications can be implemented in order to notify the household when away from the residence. This can allow the house residents to return home and make alternate arrangements with a generator for things such as fridges, medical equipment etc.

While this is a great idea, our team has looked into it and determined it would be difficult to implement as we don't actually have direct access to information about your network outage status. Instead, this information sits with your energy distributor. You can find your Distributor listed on the top of your bill, or use the lookup tool here. Individual distributors do send SMS notifications for outage events and also maintain their own pages documenting outages, so this will be your best bet in keeping up to date on outage information for the moment.
